Kālī is the upmost fierce aspect of the Goddess or Devī in Sanskrit. She instills fear into her enemies through ugrā or intense appearance with her matted hair, a necklace of human skulls, and her protruding tongue. Despite this outwardly fierce appearance, Kālī is also the Goddess of protection, destroying all negativity, all enemies, and all aliments. She brings light to those who worship her and is invoked for her strength, wellbeing and protection. According to Śakta philosophies she embodies the principle of brahman meaning ‘universal totality,’ that which is beyond all perceivable form.
